My top piece of advice to get started with ChatGPT
Get the app on your phone, use it in your personal life.
The best way to learn your way around AI chatbots is to use them in your everyday life — even outside of work. Especially outside of work.
I actually think it’s easiest to learn this tool in your personal life.
Why? The stakes are lower and you’ll actually have the time (not to mention headspace) to play around when you’re not in the daily grind of work.
So open a free account and download the ChatGPT app. Make sure you download the right one, the one developed by OpenAI (here are Apple and Android versions).
Crucially use it for stuff that actually matters.
Too often people tell me they tried ChatGPT once to write a funny limerick or similar.
Nothing wrong with that, but you won’t be invested in this tool until you use it for something that matters to you.
It’s only then that you’ll look at its outputs with a critical eye, and take the time to engage in a two-way dialogue to hone these.
Schedule AI playtime.
🛝 Playtime — just like when we were kids. (Thanks to our friend Cliff Worley for this thought.)
Set some time aside to explore. Even 10 minutes a week will get you far.
Embrace voice.
The ChatGPT app’s voice capabilities are amazing — like the chatbot Siri wanted to be but 🫣 never was.
Simply click the little vertical lines on the right side of the message bar to get it to start picking up your voice.. and prepare to be 🤩 dazzled!
Here’s a little video of me demo-ing this.
A few ideas to get you going
Some ways you can use ChatGPT outside of work:
Plan a trip — get tips for top sights and excursions
Tell it what ingredients you have and get tailored recipe ideas to minimize food waste
Create a plan to build a new habit
Write a custom bedtime story for your little one
Ask for a second opinion on a challenge you have right now
Plan a wedding (or any event)
