Where do you want to be a year from now? ðŸ”
Use AI to deepen your 2025 reflections and goal-setting
If you’re anything like me, you’re only just getting started with your 2025 goal-setting.
Remember: January 1 is an arbitrary day.
You can start anytime.
And if you’re overwhelmed and not sure where to start, this is for you.
AI can help you get from zero to one as a thought partner. It can offer provocation, poke holes in your assumptions and feed you new inspiration.
Here's a blueprint to reflect on future you and set goals via
3 powerful human reflection questions for you to ask yourself
3 prompts to go deeper with a thought-provoking conversation with AI (✨pro tips: use ChatGPT's advanced voice to make this a conversation; if you tackle these in separate sessions, reopen your previous conversation to avoid having to repeat yourself)
Note that this these prompts are specifically about career goals, but you don't have to limit yourself in this process!
Step 1: visualize you, one year from now
Picture yourself ringing in the new year at midnight on January 1, 2026. Reflect on the person you want to be in that moment.
Question: Where do I want to be a year from now? How will I feel?
Maybe you want to look even further ahead and consider how 2026 you rolls up into your 3-year or 5-year vision for yourself. Even better.
Now use AI to go deeper with this prompt 👇
You're an experienced career coach and expert in behavior change. You're going to act as my career coach. I want you to balance asking me open-ended, thought-provoking questions with offering me advice — both are important here. When you offer advice, I expect this to be credible, actionable and tightly tailored to me and my situation. Take a real talk approach, please don't just be a relentless cheerleader! I want you to be brutally honest with me, and call me out on my assumptions, shortcomings and self-limiting beliefs. Here's some context on me: [name, role, industry, geo, career history, other relevant details]. I want to start by visualizing where I want to be in my career a year from now, in color. Let's take this one step at a time, iteratively building out a clear view of what future me looks like. Where should we start?
Step 2: define 1-3 big goals
Move from your visualization to a concrete goal.
Question: If I could only accomplish one thing (or maaaybe two or three) in the next 12 months, what would it be? What’s going to move the dial for me?
Use this prompt with AI to define your 1-3 big goals for the year:
Now I want to shift gears into goal-setting. Let's ideate potential goals one by one, figure out why they matter, and assess if they're truly realistic. My aim here is to only set 1-3 big goals for this year (and we can get into practical actions later, once we’ve refined the goal). Where do you suggest we begin?
Step 3: build your plan
Now let’s get tactical.
Question: Practically what do I need to do in the next 12 months to get from here to there? What does my learning trajectory look like? And what habits, relationships, attitudes do I need to leave behind in 2024?
Try out this prompt to get AI to build out your tactical gameplan:
Now let's work backwards from my vision and goals, breaking these into milestones and practical steps using a SMART goal approach, including manageable monthly and weekly actions to achieve these 1-3 big goals. I want you to really challenge my assumptions here and get specific about tactics, timelines, and tools I can use to stay on track. Also it’s important for you to help me identify 1) what I might need to drop or change from 2024 that no longer serves my objectives, and 2) danger areas as we build this plan for 2025 where I may be setting myself up to fail. Let's sketch out this roadmap together — where do you want to start?
